At its inception IoRW set out with several broad objectives, including quality improvements in track welding, standardisation of training, reduction of weld rejection rates and sharing of industry good practice. As with any organisation these objectives can only be achieved by having committed, qualified and dedicated people within the industry frontline.

At IoRW we have a strong interest in, and commitment to, the development of people. Our links with the Professional Division of TWI enable us to give the very best advice to personnel within the rail welding industry. With this in mind we are very pleased and proud to announce the success of two senior rail welding engineers. Joe Small, Welding Engineer at Jarvis Rail and Alan Clark, Area Welding Engineer for Network Rail have both recently been awarded professional membership of The Welding Institute and registration with the Engineering Council UK. Joe and Alan represent circa 60 years of rail welding experience between them so it is very satisfying to see this wealth of experience rewarded with formal qualifications. Joe is a member of the IoRW management committee.

Joe Small - EngTech IncMWeldI

Alan Clark has achieved Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Incorporated Member (IncMWeldI) by the Mature Candidate Route (now called the Individual Route) and Joe Small has achieved Engineering Technician (EngTech) and IncMWeldI by Engineering Technician 'Route B' appraisal.

Achieving qualification by these routes is neither quick nor easy and in Alan's case involved producing an 8000 word technical thesis. Alan's paper on the subject of mobile flash butt welding of rails has been well received and has already been requested for TWI Branch lectures.

Everyone applying for membership and qualification through these routes will require an authenticated CV, a portfolio of qualification certificates, one or more interviews, and for IEng level, a technical report. Although this may appear daunting at first, with diligence and tenacity it can be achieved as Alan and Joe have proved.

It has been a privilege to act as professional advisor to both Alan and Joe; their continued success in the rail welding industry will be enhanced by their new professional status.
