Innovations in flash butt welding of rail

Wednesday 26 November 2008, Wolverhampton, 0930 - 1630hrs

Background

Flash butt welding has been used for many years for the joining of rail lengths into strings before they leave the steel mill. The process is machine-based which can facilitate monitoring and control, and which means that little manual intervention is required. It is a solid phase welding process and therefore, once the machine has been correctly set up, welds of an acceptable quality can be produced repeatedly and reliably at a fast rate.

The above advantages are also attractive in terms of welding rails on site using mobile equipment. A number of companies are involved in this activity, both from the point of view of equipment development and in terms of applications to rail construction and maintenance projects.

Now is the right time to review these developments, particularly in the light of Network Rail's interest in mobile flash but welding as part of their '7 day railway' strategy.

About this event

A team of well-known experts has been assembled in order to give a high-level, comprehensive and practical insight into the current innovations in the flash butt welding of rail. The programme includes strategic aspects, current and future equipment developments and case studies on the delivery of projects that include flash butt welding. Current information on flash butt welding technology and metallurgy will also be covered.

Benefits of attending

By attending this event you will:

  • Gain a broader understanding of the flash butt welding process as applied to rails
  • Understand where flash butt welding is expected to fit in the future UK rail strategy
  • Learn about current and future flash butt welding equipment developments
  • Be able to evaluate the effectiveness of mobile flash but welding as part of a rail maintenance or construction project

These events usually attract an attendance of around 100 participants and therefore there will be ample opportunity to meet people and to discuss topics of mutual interest in the rail welding field.
