Calais-Torino rail motorway launched

Calais-Torino rail motorway launched

14 January 2019

SNCF subsidiary VIIA launched its fourth 'rail motorway' service on November, carrying unaccompanied lorry trailers between Calais and Turin. Initially there will be three round trips per week, covering the 1150km in 18 hours, with haulage provided by Fret SNCF and Mercitalia. VIIA hopes to increase the service to two round trips per day, with a stop in Macon envisaged. From Calais there are connections with ferries to the UK. VIIA Chairman Thierry Le Guilloux said Brexit offered an opportunity for the service, as there is no need to pay lorry drivers to wait during customs checks. The terminal could also be developed as hub for Ireland, northern Germany and Scandinavia.
