Hydrogen trains could replace local electrification

Hydrogen trains could replace local electrification

05 July 2019
Railway Industrial Association decarbonisation task force technical director David Clarke has suggested that hydrogen could provide an alternative to electrification, particularly on smaller local rail lines. Under new zero-carbon rules, up to 3,400 locomotives would need to be retrofitted to an alternative energy source or their emissions offset, and it is argued that electrification of the more remote rail lines would not be feasible.
